Activity
Write Theme Poems
Activity Description
Who knew that poems could be round or square or even fish-shaped? Shape and theme poems, or poems that look like the things they describe, are a fun way to introduce children to poetry and to get them to use words in new ways. In this activity, children write and print poems in many different summer shapes.
Why This Is Helpful
Writing is a process with a number of different steps: deciding what to write about, thinking of ideas, coming up with a title, writing, revising, and publishing. This activity has children do all of these steps, which are important not only for writing a poem, but also for any kind of writing. And using everyday objects lets children think and write about things that are important to them, learning as they write that anyone can write poetry.
This activity was modified from the ReadWriteThink lesson plan “Theme Poems: Writing Extraordinary Poems About Ordinary Objects.”
