Students read rebus versions of nursery rhymes online and identify the main character in each rhyme. Then, during a shared reading of the Big Book The Enormous Watermelon, they locate the nursery rhyme characters within the story. Following the story, students use the high-frequency words from the book to play a matching game to integrate these words into their sight vocabulary.

  • Rebus Rhymes: This website will provide students with visual clues and stimulating graphics to encourage independent reading.

  • The Enormous Watermelon retold by Brenda Parkes and Judith Smith (Mimosa Publications, 1997): Your students will enjoy locating and identifying the names of recognizable nursery rhyme characters within the text of this book.
